“All My Life is Painting”
The Biography of Antonio Calderara
by Stefano Setti
In 1970, at sixty-seven years of age, Antonio Calderara wrote an autobiography in which he retraced the most significant moments that had marked his life. Those very years, above all in central Europe (the birthplace of geometric Abstract art) art critics bestowed a whole host of prestigious awards upon him and showed unconditional interest in him. Nevertheless, the glow of success did not appear to glorify him and his biography was sketched with a deep and poetical analysis that rested upon his craving to paint in order to translate the incoherence of life in every single moment as a defence against the harshness of existence. “All my life has been about painting, no involvement in other things, no other interests”, the artist wrote in his autobiography; an experience of total absorption. Even though he started off from a small town in the province of Milan – his first “Europe” – he went far from home. Indeed, at the beginning of his biography he wrote: “I was born on October 28th, 1903, in Abbiategrasso, Europe, as I prefer to call it”.
