Luciano Bartolini was born in Fiesole on 23 September 1948. During his youth he didn’t study art, but he was mainly dedicated to the learning of different languages.
From 1971 he regularly traveled to the East, visiting India and Nepal. These trips will influence his works in a significant way. From 1973 to 1974 he created his first artworks, using in particular the wrapping paper. In 1974 Bartolini started his Kleenex series, works composed of common disposable paper handkerchiefs and often of important dimensions. Also in that year, this series was assembled in a first artist’s book titled Soft, where the Kleenex were disposed and glued on a simple support of colorful paper.
The paper was Bartolini’s material of choice. In this period he created his first Cartepaglie, artisanal paper on which he applied other layers of thin paper. In 1975 he held an important one-man show at the Francoise Lambert Gallery in Milan. In 1976 another solo show
at the Galleria Ferranti in Rome, an exhibition “I colori della pittura” at I.I.L.A. in Rome and an exhibition titled “Acquisiscoes recentes” at the Museu de Arte Contemporanea of São Paulo, Brazil. That same year he published another artist’s book titled Traces.
After the exhibition “Pensando all’Oriente” at the Francoise Lambert Gallery in Milan in 1977, Bartolini started introducing gold leaves in his work.
In 1977 he participated to the XIV Bienal de Arte Contemporanea of São Paulo and exhibited at the collective show “Bilder Ohne Bilder” at Rheinisches Landesmuseum in Bonn. He created the installation The Pearl Mosque, which was presented the next year in the occasion of his solo show at the Paul Maenz Gallery in Cologne.
