Aurélie Nemours (Paris, 1910 – 2005) was a French painter.
Aurélie received a strict education and at the age of nine she went in a religious institute, the Institut de la Tour.
From 1929 to 1932 she attended the École du Louvre, while from 1937 to 1940, she studied at Paul Colin’s Advertising and Applied Arts atelier. During the war she was André Lhote’s student and after the war Fernand Léger’s.
From 1942 onwards, drawing became the best way for her to give concrete form to an image or idea: her work on paper, described as research, would always be of great importance in the artist’s development and the creation of her canvases.
In 1944 she exhibited for the first time at the Salon d’Automne, followed by the 60th Salon de l’union des femmes peintres et sculpteurs (Union of Women Painters and Sculptors), the Salon de la société des artistes indépendants (Society of Independent Artists) and the Salon d’art sacré (Religious Art).
In 1949, she participated in the Salon des réalités nouvelles (New Realities Salon), where her geometric and abstract art was noticed by Auguste Herbin. Also, in 1949 she met the writer and publisher Adrienne Monnier, who published her first poems during the same year in the literary magazine Mercure de France (no. 1029).
Aurélie Nemours’ first solo exhibition was in 1953, at the Colette Allendy Gallery, where the artist banned diagonals, keeping only verticals and horizontals.
From 1965, the square became the essential format of her work, allowing her to explore right angles, white, black and, later, monochrome.
Between 1976 and 1977, her reflections will give rise to the series “Sériels”, “Rythme du millimetre” and “Point pluriel”, in which the vibration of black and white will explode.
Aurélie Nemours’ long career took place in solitude, but she constantly challenging herself through new experiments, carrying out radical in-depth work in her paintings.
